Duty Roster & Leave — PG Resident Rights in India

Residents have real rights around duty hours and leave. Departments have real obligations. Here's the practical version.

Duty hours

NMC guidance recommends a maximum of 74 hours a week averaged over the term, with at least one weekly off. In practice, this varies widely.

Leave entitlements

  • Casual leave: as per institution
  • Maternity: 180 days
  • Paternity: institution policy
  • Exam leave: separate from casual

If denied

Document requests in writing. Escalate to the MEU or dean's office. Association bodies can help formalise grievances.

Frequently asked questions

Is maternity leave counted as part of PG duration?

It's counted toward tenure but may extend the total course if attendance requirements aren't met.

How is casual leave taken?

Formal request, HOD approval, entry in the roster. Verbal permissions cause disputes later.
